One lesson we’ve learned from quarantine is that we can stay at home and still achieve a lot, including staying fit through indoor exercises. Exercise is crucial for maintaining overall health and is also a fantastic way to manage stress, especially during tough times.
Not everyone has a home gym, but you don’t need expensive fitness equipment to stay in shape.
Here are 10 indoor exercises and DIY activities to try when it’s too hot or rainy to go outside:
Stretching
Although stretching is a prerequisite to every gym class or team sport, few non-athletes incorporate stretching on a regular basis. Stretching is essential for maintaining muscle strength, health, and flexibility. As we grow older, preserving our range of motion becomes increasingly vital.
Stairs
Climbing stairs is a fantastic indoor exercise that strengthens and tones your thighs, calves, and buttocks. Walking up and down the stairs a few times in a row also provides a great workout for your heart and lungs.
Yoga
Yoga classes are very popular in private gyms, but you can get the same benefits at home with indoor exercises. YouTube has many videos featuring yoga exercises, so you can let those online instructors guide you.
Shadow Boxing
Running and cycling are excellent cardio workouts, but they aren’t ideal in extreme heat, especially if you’re not in top shape. Indoor exercises like shadow boxing provide a good alternative that burns calories and fat, particularly if you include footwork in your routine.
Commercial Shuffle
You can fit in some indoor exercises even when you’re relaxing. While watching TV, stand up and move during commercial breaks. With about two to four minutes before the show returns, you can do squats, torso twists, leg lifts, or jumping jacks.
Calf Raises
Stand in one place and lift yourself onto your tiptoes as high as possible, or sit in a recliner and move your toes in and out. Calf raises are an easy exercise to strengthen the muscles that help you walk and run.
Jug Raises
Milk jugs make excellent home dumbbells. A full gallon of milk weighs approximately 8.6 pounds and has a convenient handle, making it ideal for exercises that strengthen your biceps and triceps.
Planks
Core strength is crucial for overall fitness, and indoor exercises like planks are among the most effective for targeting your midsection. Planks strengthen your abdominal muscles, back, and spinal column while also boosting metabolism. When performed correctly, they can enhance your posture and balance.
Sit-Stand-Jump
Sitting down and standing up might not seem like exercise, but if you do it quickly and add a jump, you’ll soon realize that a good workout doesn’t have to be complicated.
Combos
Fitness experts often suggest three sets of 10-15 reps for strength exercises, but workouts don’t need to be so strict. Instead, try rotating quickly through a series of activities like pushups, sit-ups or crunches, leg lifts, lunges, squats, planks, calf raises, and chair dips to boost strength and endurance. Indoor exercises can be conveniently done without any special equipment.
Spending more time indoors doesn’t mean you have to abandon your fitness routine. These at-home exercises can keep you active during the summer months.
As always, consult with a trained medical professional before making any significant changes to your exercise, diet, or lifestyle treatment.
